Small-angle X-ray Scattering (SACS)

SAXS is a method used to solve the overall shape of biomolecules in the size range of 5-100 kDa. The resolution that can be reached with this method is 1-2 nm. As in X-ray crystallography the scattering of X-rays from a sample are measured, however the sample is not in crystalline state and the scattering only occurs at small angles so that scattering curve can be measured (Figure 11)  (Mertens  and Svergun, 2010).

A computer calculates a structure model consisting of small spheres by approximating the measured scattering curve to a calculated curve for the model. The X-ray beam for calculation of CD163 binding came from a rotating anode X-ray source (Andersen et al., 2012).
